THE FOUNDERS

Born and raised in Kentucky, Amit Singla and Penny Peavler, like other proud Kentuckians, grew up as bourbon fanatics. But over the many years of visiting the best bourbon distilleries in the world, one recurring moment always left them uneasy.

Tour guides would routinely pour samples of unaged whiskey—traditional moonshine, or "white dog"—only to shrug it off with a dismissive and patronizing smirk: "Don’t worry and just wait... the magic happens in the barrel."

For decades, the spirits industry looked down on moonshine or unaged corn whiskey, associating it with dusty mason jars, secretive backwoods lore, a notoriously harsh burn, and overly sweet southern flavors like apple pie or peach cobbler.

As a result, the modern drinker compromised settling for other clear spirits like vodka—a "clean" but often "medicinal" and "boring" alternative that relies on multiple distillations just to hide its imperfections.

Amit and Penny refused to accept the compromise. Why wait for the barrel to do the work? Why couldn't moonshine stand as an elegant, premium, modern alternative alongside world-class vodka, tequila, and gin?

When legacy distilleries proved too bound by tradition to innovate and bring moonshine to the 21st century, Amit and Penny had no choice but to take it on themselves to be the first Modern Makers making Modern Moonshine and thus Moon Moonshine was born.

As a minority- and woman-owned brand, they set out to revolutionize an entire category on their own terms! They brought the perfect blend of expertise to the table: Amit, a veteran disruptor with over two decades of beverage innovation for Fortune 100 companies, and Penny, a three decade innovator, entrepreneur and founding director of the official starting point of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

They returned to the raw foundation of Kentucky’s heritage: 100% premium, non-GMO Kentucky white and yellow corn, paired with pure, shale-filtered limestone spring water. By elevating the raw ingredients, they engineered the infamous burn out of the finish without stripping away the spirit’s authentic character.

The harsh aftertaste of the past has been replaced with a perfectly smooth, 35% ABV finish. Moonshine is whisky that has not been aged. It is made from a mash of corn, water, yeast, and sugar, coming out clear at the end of the distillation process.
